My childhood memories are of hordes of butterflies on the buddleia in the garden. This year the buddleia is nearly over…but we have only seen one butterfly on it. I guess all the wet weather over the past three months has effectively put paid to the local butterfly population. Even our cabbages which are normally magnets for small green caterpillars are remarkable free of damage (although the explosion of slugs and snails in this damp weather are another story). It makes you wonder what the effect on wildlife in 2013 will be like.
